Background

Childhood obesity is a societal problem that many haven’t researched until recently. In the past citizens were not concerned about our children’s intake of food due to the fact they are young, and shouldn’t be bothered with the worry of weight. Lately statistics have become a concern to health officials, and several are starting to look into the causes of this epidemic. For example, the number of children overweight in 1999 has nearly tripled in the past two decades: along with this fact, type two diabetes has dramatically increased in children (“The Surgeon General’s Call To Action To and Decrease Overweight and Obesity”). This concerns officials because additional diseases will become more common as our youth’s health decreases. Due to this scare we are looking into the underlying causes of our youth’s lack of nutrition and exercise.
